Psalm 34:18- The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
I remember the first broken heart I had. I blew a kiss across the schoolroom aisle, to the cutest boy in the class, during rest time and he looked at me and turned his head the other way. I was six years old and I had expected a return kiss.
And I can remember just about every other time I've had a broken heart. As the years have gone by my heart has broken over other things... the death of my father, the grief of my mother, the struggle to have children, unsaved friends, broken relationships, death of friends and loved ones and heartaches of close friends and family and more.
But just as the presence of people helps during times of loss, the presence of the Lord, right by your side, as your comforter, peace giver, present help... that presence of the Lord... THAT gets us through those times of heartache and brokenness.
The world will tell you that other things can bring you lasting peace and comfort, but this verse assures us that the Lord's nearness is what saves us from ourselves... His spirit gives lasting results. So look no further than Him. Sure, it's good to have friends.... but in the end, no one heals a broken heart like Jesus.
